Following the Kern River
10/20/2026

   Tuesday

Started the day with sunrise in the Antelope Valley

Drove to Lake Isabella, then followed the Kern River as far north as paved roads would take us.

Stop 1 • Sunrise in Antelope Valley

Took the back way from Castaic Lake, along Lake Hughes Road, to come out in the Antelope Valley.

We were greeted there by this sunrise.

   Stop 2 • Lake Isabella

After sunrise, we stopped in Mojave for breakfast, then heading north on CA-14.

Turned west on CA-178 until we came to Lake Isabella.  Took the back road into Kernville.

   Stop 3 • Johnsondale Bridge

North of Kernville, along the Kern River, is a place where a bridge was replaced, but was left intact for people to walk on it.  On the other side of the river from the parking area are a set of steps that take you down to the river level.  Today I took those stairs.

   Stop 4 • F-35 Flyover

At least, I'm assuming it was an F-35.  And it doesn't really count as a separate stop, because I was actually hiking along the Kern River at Johnsondale Bridge when I captured this.

I caught a video, mostly shooting through the trees, and the pics are just frame grabs from the video.

Stop 5 • Sequoia National Forest

Not a single stop, but more like a section.  From the village of Johnsondale to the George Bush Campground, this 23 mile stretch of paved road follows the path of the Kern River.

We drove all the way to the end and back, and from there headed back to Dad's house in LA.
