Up to the Sierras

   Thursday

Started the day with sunrise in Palmdale, CA and finished it with sunset in Mammoth Lakes, CA

Lots of water today - California Aqueduct, a waterfall, and several lakes.

Stop 1 • Sunrise in Palmdale, CA

Left the house intentionally to catch the sunrise at the Lamont Odett Vista Point along CA-14.

This spot is pretty much immediately after you enter the Antelope Valley.

The large shinny spot you'll see in some of the pics is part of the California Aqueduct,

which flows immediately below where I was standing when I took these pics.

   Stop 2 • North Lake

228 miles north we come to North Lake, the highest lake that we can drive to in this region.

9,500ft in elevation.  The last little bit of road up to the lake is dirt,

along the edge of the mountain, with NO GUARDRAILS!

   Stop 3 • Sabrina Lake

Just downhill from North Lake, where the paved portion of the road ends.

9,128ft in elevation, this is a spectacular lake.

   Stop 4 • Misty Falls

Saw this waterfall on our way to South Lake.  Had to stop.  Great fall colors here also.

   Stop 5 • Weir Lake

The small lake, at elevation 9,593ft, is also called Weir Pond.  Just below South Lake.

   Stop 6 • South Lake

The last lake of the day is at elevation 9,868ft.  Beautiful setting at high elevation.

Stop 7 • Sunset at Minaret Vista

This vista point, on the north side of Mammoth Mountain, is at 9,265ft in elevation.

Weird fact - from my vantage point, all the water that is behind me flows to the east, then south, towards the Owens Valley, and is technically the property of the city of Los Angeles.

All the water that flows in front of me flows to the west and ends up

(if it stays in the appropriate rivers) in the San Francisco bay.
